Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy that reduces acne scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores, blackheads, and scarring to deliver overall skin rejuvenation.

At Revive, we use a SkinPen microneedling device, which is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. In as little as thirty minutes, three steps target facial acne scars and neck wrinkles for smoother, more radiant, younger-looking skin.

What is microneedling?

Skin Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that is used to encourage collagen production using a medical-grade, state-of-the-art precision microneedling device that can easily help repair deep skin damage without causing further scarring or discomfort.

​The treatment involves applying a pen-like device to the surface of the skin. The device has tiny needles that penetrate the upper layer of skin and break up old strands of collagen in the lower layer.

This wound healing response is what stimulates new collagen and elastin formation, which then assists with plumping out fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring. It also reduces the appearance of pigmentation, enlarged pores, and stretch marks.

Microneedling is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment and can be used for facial and body areas for concerns such as ageing skin, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, burns, surgical scarring, and stretch marks.

This treatment can be offered as a stand-alone skin rejuvenation treatment or combined with other non-surgical treatments for optimal results. Your aesthetician will advise on a treatment plan to suit you and your skin goals.

Before treatment:

Adhering to your preparation plan is key to achieving optimum results from your Skin Microneedling treatment.

Two weeks prior to treatment:

• Avoid laser hair removal, waxing, depilatory creams, and IPL treatments on the face.
• Avoid cosmetic grade peels.
• Avoid cosmetic treatments.
• Avoid sun exposure, always wear SPF.
• For clients prone to hyperpigmentation, we advise you to prep the skin with a melanin inhibitor such as the Institut™ – Even Blend serum, which includes all skin types capable of producing melanin. This will help reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation after the treatment.

One  week prior to treatment:

• Avoid exfoliators, acids or any retinol or vitamin A-based products.

​Where can SkinPen be used?

SkinPen can be used nearly anywhere on the body.

• Face
• Scalp

• Décolletage
• Hands
• Whole body

​What happens on treatment day?

Your face will be cleansed thoroughly, and then numbing cream will be applied. Your skin is then cleaned again once the numbing cream has had time to work. Your skin will be tested before starting the treatment to ensure adequate numbness. Most people experience nil to minimal discomfort. Procedure time is 20-30 minutes, but your appointment is 1 hour in total to ensure enough time for the numbing cream to work.

Note: If you are more than 10 minutes late for your appointment, it may not be able to be carried out, and you will lose your deposit.

​How long does it take to see the effects of SkinPen?

Immediate but best effects are seen around 4-6 weeks post-procedure.

​How long do the effects of SkinPen last?

For scar treatment, the effects are permanent unless you create a new scar. For anti-ageing, the effects last up to 12 months. It is a great product to get that ‘overall aesthetic’ outcome as it covers so many concerns in one treatment.

​Common SkinPen side effects

Swelling, skin warmth and redness, which normally settle over 1-7 days.

​What is the recovery time for SkinPen?

There is minimal downtime.

You should not wear make-up for 24- 48 hrs. This is to reduce the risk of infection. You are given a bespoke skincare product to aid recovery post procedure to use for a minimum of 48 hrs.

​SkinPen is not allowed if:

• You are pregnant/breastfeeding.
• You have any infection or inflammation in the area to be treated.
• You have hypersensitivity to the product’s contents.
• You have over scarring/keloid/hypertrophic scarring.
• You are allergic to anaesthetics, stainless steel, or aftercare products.
• You have any cancer in the past 5 years.
• You have any bleeding disorders.
• You have taken Roaccutane within 6 months.
• You suffer from autoimmune conditions, e.g. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

​After treatment

Any redness and irritation will subside within 3-4 hours. For the first 48 hours, avoid excessive sun exposure, hot showers, saunas, and strenuous exercise.

• Avoid swimming or strenuous exercises for at least the next 24-48 hours.
• Use correct aftercare, including gentle hydrating products that are recommended by your aesthetician.
• Avoid active/exfoliating products for the next 5-7 days after the treatment.
• Don’t pull or pick any loose skin after the treatment.
